About Eddie Martinez
Eddie Martinez, born in 1977 at Groton Naval Base, Connecticut, is an American painter and sculptor based in Brooklyn. His work uniquely merges painting and drawing, abstraction and representation, often featuring personal iconography such as bug-eyed figures and blockheads. Known for his energetic use of color and texture, Martinez employs a mix of oil, enamel, spray paint, and found objects to create dynamic artworks that invite varied interpretations.
Martinez's innovative practice has garnered significant institutional support, with multiple solo exhibitions, including those at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit and the Bronx Museum. His works are represented in notable public collections, such as the Carnegie Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Drawing from a rich understanding of art history, his style has been described as an updated Neo-Expressionism, reflecting influences from CoBrA and action painting, as well as the late work of Philip Guston. In 2024, Martinez will represent the Republic of San Marino at La Biennale di Venezia with an exhibition specifically curated for the event. His ongoing exploration of pop culture-infused abstraction continues to resonate within the contemporary art scene.
