The RMS-05 was born from an ambition to prove that Richard Mille’s horological philosophy could transcend the wrist. Unveiled at SIHH 2016 after four years of intensive research and development, it was engineered as a "pure product of watchmaking," designed by the brand’s movement creators to elevate the fountain pen from a static relic to a high-functioning machine. By applying the same "Passion First" rigor used in their racing-inspired timepieces, Richard Mille transformed a centuries-old writing tool into a kinetic sculpture, bridging the gap between historical tradition and futuristic material science.

Nestled within a sapphire cylinder of the RMS-05 is a 12 jewel, skeletonized caliber built atop a grade 5 titanium baseplate. This movement utilizes a recoil escapement to regulate the smooth deployment of its 18k white gold nib. A simple press of the plunger at the top triggers the gears to extend the nib, while the act of replacing the cap resets the recoil spring, winding the pen for its next use. It is a masterful piece of micro-engineering serving up the technical theater Richard Mille is known for.

This specific execution in NTPT (North Thin Ply Technology) carbon is composed of over 600 layers of carbon filaments—each less than 30 microns thick. The barrel possesses a damascene-like texture that is both ultra-light and extremely rigid. Because the machining process reveals these layers randomly, no two pens are identical, offering exclusivity demanded by the modern collector.
