Catalog Essay

Part of the iconic Jay Chou x Sotheby's auction that took place in Hong Kong, Sui Jianguo's Made in China, 2007 (Yellow Dinosaur) sculpture part of his signature "Made in China" series, examines China's identity as a worldwide industrial superpower. This sculpture is distinguished by its vivid yellow color and is composed of fiberglass, a popular material in Sui's dinosaur works with this present example numbered 30 out of 150 limited edition series.

About Sui Jianguo

Sui Jianguo is a prominent modern Chinese artist known for his innovative sculptures that explore China's modernization and cultural identity. Born in Qingdao in 1956, he experienced the realities of socialist art during Mao's rule. At ten, he began working in factories due to school closures during the Cultural Revolution. An injury led him to pursue art, supported by his father, which sparked his creative journey.

Sui studied sculpture in Jinan and Shandong, later earning a master’s degree from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. He gained international recognition for his naturalistic sculptures, initially rooted in symbolism and social commentary. Over time, his work evolved to address broader themes of space and time, exemplified in pieces like "Legacy Mantle" and "Made in China."

Regarded as a pioneer in conceptualism, Sui Jianguo has exhibited widely in China and internationally, including in Barcelona and Hiroshima. As a senior professor at Beijing's Central Academy of Fine Arts, he continues to influence the contemporary art scene, using his sculptures to tackle the complexities of China's modernization.
