About Jade Clark
Jake Clark, born in 1985 in Melbourne, Australia, is a self-taught ceramic artist known for his vibrant, glossy glazed ceramics that pay homage to cultural icons and classic restaurants. Inspired by his grandparents' collection of pots and sculptures, Clark's artistic journey began early, evolving from drawing to graffiti influenced by Keith Haring's subway art.
After studying horticulture at Holmesglen Institute, Clark transitioned to working with clay, captivated by its versatility for creating three-dimensional forms. His work combines elements of commercial culture, branding, and everyday visuals, drawing from his experiences in various settings—from supermarkets to street signs.
Clark's ceramics often depict iconic dishes and restaurant aesthetics from New York, Los Angeles, and Miami, such as a pastel pastrami sandwich or a volcano-shaped vessel with steak. His artistic process involves hand-building each piece with coils of clay, firing them multiple times, and painting with layers of underglaze to achieve bright colors.
Currently based in Gowanus, Brooklyn, Clark's work has been featured in solo exhibitions, including "Icônes" at Galerie Julien Cadet in Paris (2021) and "Miami Vice" at Bill Brady Gallery (2021). His pieces evoke a sense of nostalgia while celebrating the visual personalities of old-school restaurants, merging culinary memories with the tactile quality of ceramics. Through his art, Clark invites viewers to reflect on the intersection of food, culture, and memory.
