Catalog Essay

Huang Yulong's beautiful bronze sculpture Heaven and Earth delves into profound topics of existence and enlightenment. This piece, numbered ⅝ in a limited edition series, reflects the artist's distinct vision of spirituality. Yulong is influenced by hip-hop culture and incorporates qualities such as energy and personality into his work, resulting in a modern tale that resonates with contemporary collectors and enthusiasts of street culture. The sculpture allows visitors to reflect on their own journeys of self-discovery and understanding, connecting classical artistic expression with the vivid energy of contemporary life.

About Huang- Yulong

Huang Yulong, born in 1983 in Anhui Province, China, is a prominent contemporary sculptor known for his innovative blend of traditional Chinese craftsmanship and contemporary urban culture, particularly hip-hop. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in 2007, which influenced his unique artistic approach.

Huang's work often explores themes of identity, reflecting the experiences of China’s post-80s generation, particularly the "only child" demographic. His art incorporates cultural symbols and philosophies to bridge his Chinese heritage with global influences, particularly those from hip-hop and street art. Rather than merely appropriating these elements, Huang uses them to express the complexities of growing up during a period of rapid cultural change in China.

Utilizing a variety of media, Huang combines traditional materials like ceramic porcelain and bronze with modern elements such as crystals. His sculptures frequently depict figures in hoodies adorned with "bling," symbolizing the energy and narratives associated with urban life.

Huang Yulong has gained international acclaim, showcasing his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including "Outsider" at the Ping'an Financial Center in Shenzhen (2023) and "Bronze to Beat" at Next Street Gallery in Paris (2023). His participation in the Shenzhen Art Biennale (2018) further solidified his presence in the contemporary art scene. Through his art, Huang continues to redefine cultural identity in the context of globalization, making him a significant voice in contemporary Chinese sculpture.
